SLEEPING COMFORT

1. How do I find my Sleep Number®?

A:  On a Sleep Number® bed, the first thing to do is to find your Sleep Number® by experimenting with different settings. Most people find that a softer setting-even softer than you might normally consider-is more comfortable than firmer settings. If you're just beginning to sleep on the Sleep Number® bed, you may want to find a setting that most closely resembles your previous mattress. Then, slowly make changes by only one or two increments every three to four nights until you find a setting that is most comfortable for you.

2. How can I prevent my arm from "falling asleep" or tingling in the middle of the night?

A:  Reduce pressure points with a high quality, innovative bed such as The Sleep Number® bed, which adjusts and conforms to you and your sleep position, providing more natural spinal alignment and fewer pressure points.

The physics of gravity play a role in how well you sleep at night. When you sleep, gravity and your body weight push you against the surface of your mattress. As soft tissue and muscles encounter a traditional metal-coil mattress, bodies give -- but the mattress does not. This can create uncomfortable pressure points and uneven support over time.

If you are a side sleeper, you may experience uncomfortable pressure points at your shoulder, arm, hips or side. Reduced blood circulation at those contact points with a firm mattress can give you a tingling or pins-and-needles feeling. Pressure points can affect the following:

  • Sleeping comfort level
  • Blood circulation
  • Restorative sleep
  • Aches & pains

3. What can I do to avoid insomnia?

A:  Insomnia can include difficulty falling asleep, waking during the night, waking too early or not waking refreshed. Some of the causes are behavioral or psychological; however, there are a variety of reasons for this condition. Creating a restful sleep environment and following some basic sleep tips can help you avoid insomnia.

4. How can I relieve my aching back so I can fall asleep?

A:  Lower back pain is a problem for millions of North Americans. Whether it's a chronic problem or something that occurs every now and then, back pain is a major cause of a poor night's sleep and discomfort during waking hours. This cycle of pain and loss of sleep can lead to reduced productivity and well-being.

6. How can I reduce allergens in the bedroom?

A:  Millions of North Americans suffer from allergies, especially in warmer months. The bedroom presents some especially difficult challenges for allergy sufferers as there are many opportunities for allergens, such as dust mites, mold or mildew, to thrive in many types of pillows, bedding, upholstery, mattresses, carpeting and draperies.

7. What is sleep apnea?

A:  Sleep apnea can include excessive snoring or disruptions in breathing. Apnea usually occurs when air flow to the nose or mouth is restricted. In relatively rare conditions, it's the result of the brain failing to properly signal the muscles which affect breathing. Depending on the cause of the disorder, treatment may involve behavioral or special equipment to help regulate the sleeper's air flow at night. If you have these symptoms, you should consult your primary physician.
